Yesterday I found it amusing to parody the style of Wittgenstein's Mistress, actually. Markson's Wittgenstein's Mistress got a huge plug from David Foster Wallace, but Markson's index-card tetraology of Reader's Block, This is Not a Novel, Vanishing Point, and The Last Novel, are to me, more rereadable. Finished Blake Butler's Sky Saw and Raymond Queneau's The Flight of Icarus. Somebody is living in the Louvre, certain of the messages would say. In fact I couldn't put it down and in the process I felt more intelligent reading it! In the beginning, sometimes I left messages in the street. My justification for missing the former is that I spilled tea on the front page. This is probably because ten years ago I was mad and ate the green canvas webbing from the seat of the last lawn chair. I did like this but forgot to mention that I skipped Democracy and Commerce at the US Open, and I did not finish the whole of Wittgenstein's Mistress. "The sentences proceed directly one from another," observed Amy Hempel in her review of "Wittgenstein's Mistress" (Dalkey Archive Press, 1988), perhaps Markson's best-known novel.
